Forgotten Firsts Dept.: Portland's first police force was established in 1798.
The eight watchmen on the job kept an eye on things from 10 p.m. until daylight.
According to author Herbert G. Jones, the officers "were required to carry long hooked sticks very much on the order of the hook, so popular on amateur nights."
