
On this date in 1839, an agreement between Maine's governor and Britain's lieutenant governor of New Brunswick forestalled hostilities over a border dispute in northern Maine.
The so-called "Bloodless Aroostook War" cost one human life - that of U.S. Army Pvt. Hiram Smith, who died of unknown causes while building a road.
