
Edmund Muskie was born in Rumford on this date in 1914. Muskie, later a U.S. senator and secretary of state, made national news in 1955 when he became Maine's first Democratic governor in 20 years.
As much as Muskie revitalized Maine's Democratic Party, he also represented a new political era, making effective use of television and seeking to engage young people.
